Virginia Sen. Creigh Deeds In Critical Condition After Stabbing
Sen. Creigh Deeds is in critical condition after being stabbed in what state police are calling an “assault” at his rural home that also left his son, Gus, dead of a gunshot wound.
The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports that the Virginia Senator, a prominent statewide political figure who narrowly lost the 2005 attorney general’s race, represents rural Bath County.
“Virginia State Police are on the scene of an assault of a state legislator that took place Tuesday morning,” said a state police news release. “Senator Creigh Deeds has been transported to U.Va. Hospital in Charlottesville for treatment of serious injuries sustained in the assault at his residence.”
Some reports claim the son was the one who attacked Deeds and then shot himself, but this report is yet to be confirmed.
George Zimmerman Arrested Again
George Zimmerman is back in the news… guess why… that’s right, he was arrested yet again.
Zimmerman is in police custody after getting arrested today on domestic violence charges, WFTV reports. It’s not clear what happened (but reportedly his girlfriend is involved in the dispute), but the disturbance occurred at a residence in Apopka, about 24 miles from Sanford, where Zimmerman shot Trayvon Martin. It’s also where the Seminole County Jail is located; Zimmerman will be locked up there shortly, the Orlando Sentinel reports.
LAX Shooting Leaves One Dead, Many Injured
A LAX TSA employee has been killed in today’s shooting at a security checkpoint inside the Airport.
Details about the shooter remain in flux although he has been identified as 23-year-old Paul Ciancia. The latest reports suggest he was wounded by police in the ensuing shootout but remains alive and in custody. The Los Angeles Times quotes a federal official as saying he was a ticketed passenger, contradicting earlier reports that he was a TSA employee.
Other people were wounded by gunfire as well, though the exact number remains unclear. At least six were taken to the hospital. Police say the gunman entered Terminal 3 about 9:20am, pulled a high-powered rifle from a bag, and opened fire. Police quickly engaged him in a shootout.
The FAA halted flights to the airport as a precaution, reports AP, but the mayor says the situation is now under control.
“I heard a popping sound, and everybody was diving for cover. The TSA said there was a shooting in the terminal and evacuate the building.” A witness said to news outlets.
Chris Brown Arrested In Washington For Assault
Chris Brown made it down to Washington this weekend, and after he got bored of sightseeing he went out and punched a guy in the face… because that’s what Chris Brown does.
According to sources, Brown was in town, where he partied at the Park on 14th nightclub. Him and his bodyguard then apparently got into an altercation with another man around 4:30 a.m. at the W, just a few blocks away from the nightclub. The argument culminated in Brown allegedly punching the man in the face. TMZ reports the other man never threw a punch and is claiming injury at a local hospital.
Witnesses say Brown didn’t appear to be intoxicated.
The shenanigans got Brown and his bodyguard arrested on yet another felony assault charge and booked into a DC jail. Brown probably won’t be released until Monday, when he’ll be able to see a judge for arraignments.
People Too Busy Texting To Notice Gunman Inside Train
A man pulled a gun and walked around looking for a target during a commuter train ride in San Francisco last month… only nobody noticed.
When the killer pulled out his handgun, the dozens of passengers nearby were so engrossed in their smartphones and tablet computers that they didn’t notice a thing, police say. Security video shows the gunman repeatedly flashing the .45 caliber pistol with other passengers close by, pointing it across the aisle and even using the hand holding the gun to wipe his nose before shooting university student Justin Valdez dead, apparently at random, police tell the San Francisco Chronicle.
“These weren’t concealed movements—the gun is very clear,” the district attorney says. “These people are in very close proximity with him, and nobody sees this. They’re just so engrossed, texting and reading and whatnot. They’re completely oblivious of their surroundings.” The city’s police chief says that while the force appreciates the evidence cell phone videos provide, people who use smartphones in public need to pay more attention to their surroundings, because being preoccupied makes them “so incredibly vulnerable to crime.” A 30-year-old man has been charged with the student’s murder.
“Hiccup Girl” Gets Life Sentence For Murder
Remember Jennifer Mee? She’s the girl that got national attention a few years ago as ‘hiccup girl’ because of her uncontrollable hiccupping. Anyway, she was found guilty of first-degree murder last night and will serve life in prison without parole.
A Pinellas County jury deliberated for four hours before delivering the verdict against 22-year-old Jennifer, Judge Nancy Moate Ley explained that the only possible sentence for the charge was life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Mee’s attorneys said she suffered from schizophrenia and Tourette’s Syndrome, and a court psychiatrist said her intelligence was “low normal.” As a 15-year-old, Mee developed a case of the hiccups that wouldn’t go away and appeared on national TV shows. They mostly went away on their own, though Mee still takes medication to control them. In 2010, Mee lured Shannon Griffin, a 22-year-old Walmart worker, to an abandoned home under the pretense of buying marijuana. Once there, two of Mee’s friends robbed Griffin at gunpoint—but he struggled and was shot four times.
Woman Gets Life Sentence For DUI Bust
To be fair, it was the sixth time… but it still feels a little harsh.
Rose Ann Davidson, who avoided lengthy prison sentences the first time, wasn’t so lucky for her sixth time. The Austin American-Statesman reports that a jury gave the 44-year-old San Marcos woman a life sentence yesterday after she got busted for drunken driving.
Davidson’s first conviction came in 1996, and the one that landed her the life sentence occurred last summer. A police officer stopped her for erratic driving on Interstate 35, and the open container of beer in the car didn’t help her case.
George Zimmerman Arrested After Pulling Gun On Wife
George Zimmerman is back on the news after getting detained when police responded to a domestic disturbance call.
Reportedly, Zimmerman’s wife Shellie — who recently filed for divorce — called police after he threatened her and her father with a gun. Shellie Zimmerman’s attorney told ABC News that George threatened her with a knife and gun.
Fox News reports Zimmerman is in “investigative detention.” No injuries have been reported, and it’s unclear what charges Zimmerman might face.
