A training partner for Usain Bolt? Afraid not …

3 November 2009 No Comment

Usain Bolt is no longer the fastest creature in his own family.

That’s because the world’s fastest human has adopted the fastest animal on land, welcoming a new baby cheetah named Lightning Bolt into his life.

Bolt’s sponsorship of the 3-month-old male cheetah is part of an effort to boost Kenyan conservation efforts of its famous wildlife. He paid $13,700 to formally adopt the cub and will also pay $3,000 a year to care for Lighting Bolt, who will be raised at an animal orphanage in Nairobi.

Lighting Bolt is among three cubs rescued by Kenya Wildlife Service officials after their mother abandoned them in a game park. Kenyan wildlife is threatened by trophy hunting, climate change and human encroachment.

Seriously, I can’t believe that some TV network hasn’t arranged a Bolt vs. cheetah race yet. Surely you remember the Man vs. Beast show on Fox a few years ago.

Bolt, by the way, plans to try his hand at the 400 meters after setting world records in the 100 and 200. He told a news conference on Friday his main goal was to become a legend in his sport after shattering the 100 and 200 world records at last year’s Beijing Olympics and again at this year’s Berlin world championships.

“Next year is the same thing, win the championships, break more records and eventually move up to the 400 meters,” he said.
