Excellent news for the tennis world as world No. 2 Rafael Nadal will be back on the starting next week at the Montreal Masters. Nadal of course, withdrew from Wimbledon, which Roger Federer won again and took back the No. 1 ranking.

The Spaniard has been suffering from tendinitis in both knees and has not played a competitive match since being knocked out in the fourth round of the French Open by Robin Soderling on May 31.

“Rafa will play in Montreal. It is good news for us,” Toni Nadal, Rafa’s coach and uncle, said. “It’s another thing to know what standard he will be at. I imagine he won’t be in very good condition. He has been training but without really pushing it very much.”

It’s not surprising to see Nadal back next week, because he will want to fine-tune his game for the year’s final major, the , which begins in late August. It’s the only Slam that Nadal has never won. In fact, Nadal will then play the week following Montreal on the hardcourts at Cincinnati as well.

Federer, the new father of twins, has not yet confirmed his participation in Montreal. He has taken a break from tennis for their birth but long targeted a return to the court at Montreal to prepare for an attempt at a sixth title.

Nadal has beaten the Swiss star 13 times in 20 meetings, but they have only played once in a Grand Slam this year, with Nadal beating Federer in the Australian Open final.

“My main objective isn’t to regain the No. 1 ranking,” Nadal said. “My main goal is to be well and happy to be playing tennis.”
