Bolt vs. Blake 100-meter duel highlights Sunday’s Olympic schedule
Perhaps the most anticipated event of these London Olympics arrives on Sunday with the finals of the men’s 100-meter dash. Jamaica’s Usain Bolt became an international superstar in Beijing when he won the 100 in world record time (later breaking it in 2009) – and then did the same in the 200.
While Bolt is favored at WagerWeb.com to repeat in the 100, he was beaten in that even in last year’s world championships by teammate Yohan Blake – Bolt was disqualified for a false start. But at the Jamaican Olympic trials, Blake beat Bolt again in the 100 (and the 200). The top American contenders are Tyson Gay and Justin Gatlin, the gold medalist in the 100 in 2004 at Athens and the winner of the U.S. trials in late June.
The 100 is just one of six golds to be won in track & field on Sunday. In the women’s 400 meters, Great Britain’s Christine Ohuruogu emerged as an unexpected champion four years ago, edging out Shericka Williams of Jamaica and heavily-favored Sanya Richards-Ross of the U.S. But Richards-Ross has been dominant thus far in 2012 and is running like an athlete hell-bent on making amends for her 2008 setback. Also look for Amantle Montsho of Botswana, who surprised many by winning the 2011 world championship.
