Beckham deal reached; is he now hurt?
A deal was reached over the weekend that ended the tug-of-war over soccer star David Beckham, but is that deal already in jeopardy?
Becks will continue to play for AC Milan (and England’s national team) until the MLS season starts in July. The Italian club worked out a deal with the Los Angeles Galaxy that allowed the 33-year-old Beckham to forgo his expected return to the U.S. on Monday.
“I’m really grateful to the LA Galaxy and AC Milan for making this dream deal happen,” Beckham said. “The perfect result for 2009 would be for me to help Milan to reach the Champions League and for the LA Galaxy to make the playoffs and win the MLS Cup.”
Beckham has struggled since the Galaxy signed him Jan. 11, 2007. He has played in 30 games with five goals and 12 assists, and was hampered by a knee injury in his first MLS season.
But apparently everyone thought this deal made everyone happy. Beckham was to help fund the addition loan time ($3 million of his own money), and MLS got its biggest star back. The Galaxy even got the promise of a friendly match with AC Milan this summer.

But there are rumors this is falling apart. According to reports out of Italy, AC Milan is trying to find another way for Becks to stay on with the team past June. Beckham does have an opt-out clause of his MLS deal in November and also has a clause to where he can buy an MLS team.
“I have the right to own an MLS franchise, which I will action immediately after I have stopped playing,” Beckham told the BBC. He said this was part of his “commitment to develop soccer in the United States, which is something I am passionate about.”
So it’s hard to imagine Beckham torpedoing that option by not returning to MLS as promised.
By the way, Beckham hurt his right ankle during practice with AC Milan on Tuesday, although the injury does not appear serious. The Italian league club said it will evaluate the former England captain over the next few days. Milan plays at Siena on Sunday – bet on the match at WagerWeb.com.
