Davies injury a blow to U.S. soccer team

Obviously soccer is the last thing on the mind of U.S. national soccer team member Charlie Davies after he suffered a broken right leg and left elbow and internal injuries in a single-car crash early Tuesday morning in a single-car crash that killed a passenger in northern Virginia.

But we’re a betting site, and the likelihood is that Davies misses the World Cup next year in South Africa now, and that would be a key loss for the Americans, who play Costa Rica in a mostly worthless qualifier tonight in Washington, D.C. – bet on the match at WagerWeb.com.

Davies, a forward, was just two days removed from playing 78 minutes in victory in Honduras that secured the U.S.’ spot in next year’s Cup. He was listed in serious but stable condition after undergoing several hours of surgery at the Washington Hospital Center. His injuries were not considered life-threatening, a U.S. Soccer spokesman said. They also included a lacerated bladder and facial fractures.

“Injuries of this nature usually require a recovery period of six to 12 months and extensive rehabilitation,”
said U.S. Soccer physician Dr. Dan Kalbac, who worked with the treating doctors. “Due to Charlie’s fitness level, his prognosis for recovery and his ability to resume high-level competition is substantially improved.”

Davies, 23, was out despite a team curfew. He came up huge in the FIFA Confederations Cup in South Africa in June. He scored in the 3-0 group win over Egypt, nearly did so in the 2-0 semifinal upset of Spain and set up a goal in the 3-2 final loss to Brazil. Davies scored the lone U.S. goal against Mexico in a 2-1 loss at Estadio Azteca in August.

Many call Davies the heart and soul of the team. Only he and Landon Donovan have demonstrated the type of quickness that can give top-flight defenders consistent trouble.
