Beckham headed back to Italy
David Beckham is leaving America, but don’t panic Los Angeles Galaxy or MLS fans: He’s only going to another team on temporary loan.
Beckham will join AC Milan on Jan. 7, although no details have been released on when the loan deal would end. Major League Soccer’s new season starts next March.
However, Milan’s sporting director, Umberto Gandini, said: “The deal will be as long as David wishes. I think his commitment to MLS and Los Angeles Galaxy will take him back after a couple of months.
Asked about the potential for Beckham staying with Milan on a longer-term basis, Gandini said: “No, David is committed to the Los Angeles Galaxy and the MLS. He has a commitment to go back to the MLS and I think he will do that.”
Beckham is not certain to play regularly for Milan, with nothing in his loan contract stipulating he will play in a specific number of games. The 33-year-old, who has previously starred for Manchester United and Real Madrid, will play both Serie A and UEFA Cup games for Milan, and his first match could be an away match against Roma on Jan. 11.

The former England captain had been a target of Milan before, in January 2007, but opted instead to move to Los Angeles from Real Madrid.
Beckham, who is under contract with the Galaxy until June 2012, wanted to join the Italian power during the MLS offseason to keep up his fitness and help his prospects for competing with the English national team.
By the way, England’s national team coach is Fabio Capello, who dropped Beckham while they were together at Real Madrid.
“At Madrid I left him out of the squad because he had signed a contract with Los Angeles, but he continued to come on the field and train and I put him back in the team.”
Capello called it a “great acquisition” for Milan.
England’s next World Cup qualifier, by the way, is against Ukraine on April 1.
