Why Tiger Woods will win the Tour Championship

Do I really need to explain why Tiger Woods will win this week’s ? Frankly, Tiger almost NEEDS to win this week to call it a successful season, and when Tiger’s motivated, other golfers rarely have a chance.

Of course Tiger didn’t win a major this year, which is usually all he cares about. But cashing in that $10 million prize for winning the FedEx Cup playoffs, which Tiger would do with a victory this week, is a nice consolation gift. And he appears to have history on his side.

Tiger missed last year’s but in 2007, he set a tournament-record with a 23-under 257, which bettered the previous mark by six shots. Woods is also the only two-time winner of this event in history. Not to mention Tiger is coming off a dominating performance in winning last week’s BMW Championship. The last time he won at Cog Hill (where last week’s BMW was) was in 2007, when he followed with that record-breaking performance at the .

Woods also has three runner-up finishes in the to go along with his two wins, and he’s a collective 47 under at East Lake. He seems a lock to be Player of the Year again this year and leads the Tour in scoring average by an incredible 1.25 shots. That’s five shots in a four-round tournament.

“It’s been one of my most consistent seasons,” Woods said. “To have this many high finishes, I think it’s pretty good. Excluding match play, I had two finishes outside the top 10 in stroke play and one of them was an 11th. I think that’s a pretty good season.”

But to bet on Tiger at +105, as he is listed to win this week at WagerWeb.com, is almost a waste of money. Your best bet might be to take the top American minus Tiger or odds to win minus Tiger.

By the way, course conditions could be an issue this weekend. The Atlanta area has been hit with record rains, and the East Lake course was underwater earlier this week. The weather cleared on Wednesday, but more is possible for Thursday.

Mark Russell, the PGA Tour vice president for rules and competitions, said that he was “very pleasantly surprised” at how quickly the condition of the golf course had been transformed from totally unplayable to almost tournament ready.
