Tiger may return to PGA Tour in late February
The PGA Tour season is underway in Hawaii without Tiger Woods, but as usual Tiger looms largest over the entire sport.
Tiger, who is the overwhelming player of the year favorite on WagerWeb.com (remember, he actually didn’t win it last year for just the second time since he became a full-time pro), reportedly might return to competitive play on Tour at the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship during the last week in February. That’s if you believe the Associated Press.
If you listen to USA Today, it reports Tiger could be back in March at the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill (basically Tiger’s home course in Orlando) or at the WGC-CA Championship at Doral later that month.
Tiger, of course, hasn’t played since last June’s U.S. Open and underwent knee surgery soon after that incredible win over Rocco Mediate. It was Woods’ second left knee surgery of the year after he underwent a procedure two days after finishing as runner-up to Trevor Immelman at the Masters in April. He also was dealing with small fractures in his leg.

Obviously both of these reports assume that Woods will have no swelling or complications from surgery, but pretty much everyone expects Tiger to get back before the Masters so he can get his game in order. His wife is expecting their second child in February, so he won’t return before then. Tiger began taking full swings with short clubs in December and said in late December that the knee felt better than ever. All he has said about returning is that he plans to be back by the Masters.
The Match Play, which Tiger won last year, is held at Marana in Tucson, Ariz., and it’s a very hilly course, so that could be taxing on Woods’ knee.
Depending how long Woods recuperates, there’s a long-shot mathematical chance he could lose the No. 1 spot in the Official World Golf Ranking. Sergio Garcia is the current No. 2.
One thing you can bet on: Tiger has a flair for the dramatic, so he won’t be back until he’s sure he can win.
