The Presidents Cup preview
Folks, if you are a golf bettor on WagerWeb.com, this weekend’s Presidents Cup competition is pretty much your last chance to bet on a top-flight tournament until 2010 – and it’s certainly the last time you will see either Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson or many other big-name players on the U.S. tour for the rest of 2009.
The Presidents Cup, a Ryder Cup-style tournament, begins Thursday at Harding Park in San Francisco, and the US is a -360 betting favorite over the International team on WagerWeb.com.
The Day 1 matches, which will be foursome matches (alternate shots), tend to show who will win this event. On four occasions in the past seven Presidents Cup, the U.S. owned a lead of at least 4-1, including two 5-0 shutouts. And five times overall, the Day 1 leader went on to win. The only exceptions came in 2003, when the International squad led 3½-2½ and the match ended in a 17-17 tie, and in 2005, when the International squad also led 3½-2½, but the Americans rallied to win 18½-15 ½. In the Day 1 matches’ history, the USA holds a 41 1/2-29 1/2 advantage in foursomes.
“I would not say it’s the be-all and end-all, but historically we know America has been dominant in the alternate-shot,” International assistant captain Frank Nobilo said of the first-day pairings. “That was an area that we knew as far back as January that we would have to attend to.”
Here is Thursday’s schedule:
3:10 p.m. ET: Anthony Kim/ Phil Mickelson (U.S.) vs. Mike Weir/Tim Clark (Int’l)
3:22 p.m. ET: Hunter Mahan/Sean O’Hair (U.S.) vs. Adam Scott/Ernie Els (Int’l)
3:34 p.m. ET: Lucas Glover/Stewart Cink (U.S.) vs. Vijay Singh/Robert Allenby (Int’l)
3:46 p.m. ET: Kenny Perry/Zach Johnson (U.S.) vs. Angel Cabrera/Camilo Villegas (Int’l)
3:58 p.m. ET: Tiger Woods/Steve Stricker (U.S.) vs. Geoff Ogilvy/Ryo Ishikawa (Int’l)
4:10 p.m. ET: Jim Furyk/Justin Leonard (U.S.) vs. Retief Goosen/Y.E. Yang (Int’l)
Tiger is 13-11-1 all-time in Presidents Cup matches, while Mickelson is 11-13-9. Team USA is 5-1-1 in the seven previous Presidents Cup matches. Mickelson and International team member Singh are the only two players who have played in every Presidents Cup so far. Furyk has the most career wins among Americans in all Presidents Cup matches with 13. Kim and O’Hair are playing in this event for the first time for Team USA.
Here’s the rest of the schedule this weekend:
*-Six better-ball matches and five alternate-shot matches Friday.
*-Five alternate-shot matches Saturday morning, and five better-ball matches Saturday afternoon.
*-Twelve singles matches Sunday.
One point is awarded for each win, a half-point when the match ends in a draw. Singles matches that end in a tie go extra holes until one team has 17 1/2 points.
Wouldn’t it be something to see Yang and Woods matched up on Sunday in singles after Yang pulled off the upset over Tiger in the PGA Championship?
