It was just about a certainty that Phil Mickelson was going to skip next week’s because he wanted to be with his wife, Amy, who is dealing with breast cancer treatments.

Well, Mickelson was dealt another dose of similar bad news this week when it was revealed his mother also has breast cancer. Mary Mickelson is to have surgery Friday at the MD Anderson Cancer Center, the same hospital where Mickelson’s wife had surgery last Wednesday.

M.D. Anderson has been ranked since 1990 as among the top two cancer centers in the nation by U.S. News & World Report’s annual survey of the nation’s best hospitals. The hospital treats about 90,000 patients each year.

Mickelson’s sister, Tina, told the newspaper she wanted to make her mother’s condition known so she could receive the same outpouring of support and prayers that meant so much to Amy Mickelson.

Mickelson has not spoken publicly since the U.S. Open, where he was a runner-up for a record fifth time. T.R. Reinman, media representative for , said the Mickelson family has declined to comment “although the family is very appreciative for the support.”

The American Cancer Society estimates that one in two women get cancer in a lifetime, and it’s not all that unusual for the disease to strike twice in family.

certainly won’t be going overseas for the next week, and  he might not return to golf this year unless it’s something that his wife and mother insist he do. Lefty played the U.S. Open only because he wife asked him to win a trophy for her – and he almost did.
