This week on PGA Tour: WGC-Bridgestone Invitational
There are actually two PGA Tour events this week, but we’ll focus on the invitation-only World Golf Championships Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone Country Club in Akron.
Because it’s a WGC event, all the big names are here, including Tiger Woods as he looks to win on Tour for the second week in a row and fifth time this year, and Phil Mickelson, who hadn’t played since the U.S.
Open as his wife was dealing with breast cancer.
Frankly, picking against anyone but Tiger at this course is silly, as Woods has won six times at Firestone in his career. Thus he is the overwhelming WagerWeb.com favorite at +160.
Mickelson, the second favorite this week on WagerWeb.com at +1500, has yet to win this event in 10 career tries, but has three top-four finishes.

Want a bit of a sleeper this week? Try Lee Westwood at +2400 on WagerWeb.com. The Englishman has top-10 finishes in his last three starts and was second here last year after leading through 54 holes.
Vijay Singh (+4000 on WagerWeb.com this week) is the defending champ, beating Stuart Appleby and Westwood by one stroke in 2008. But Singh, 46, hasn’t had a good year, which he attributes to coming back too soon from knee surgery in January.
“I’m really disappointed, but I came out of February well, and I just started playing a little too soon and it kind of put me back quite a bit,” he said. “Instead of taking two months off, I took a month and a half off, and going to the range created a lot of bad habits for my golf swing. And it took two or three months to get out of it.”
Singh does have two top-10 finishes in his past six starts, so maybe he his finding his swing again.
A near lock to finish well here is Jim Furyk, who can’t seem to buy a victory on Tour but has six top-10s at Firestone, including a runner-up finish to Tiger in 2001.
Appleby is tremendous value this week at +10000 on WagerWeb.om. He has six top-20 finishes in his past seven starts here and probably should have won last year.
And watch for Germany’s Martin Kaymer (+4800 on WagerWeb.com). He is the hottest player in Europe right now after posting back-to-back wins prior to the British Open.
The WGC has 49 of the top 50 players in the world rankings and the entire top 10.
