Mickelson back on PGA Tour next week

The next month will be a great time for golf bettors on WagerWeb.com. That’s because Tiger Woods is expected to play in each of the next three tournaments, starting at this week’s Buick Open, while Phil Mickelson has announced he will return to the next week at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational in Akron, Ohio.

Lefty hasn’t played since the U.S. Open, taking time off to be with his family while his wife, Amy, and mother, Mary, battle breast cancer.

Mickelson said all along he was unsure about his schedule as his wife was about to undergo cancer treatment; then news came out about his mother. Mickelson subsequently missed the British Open, snapping a streak of 61 straight major championship appearances dating to 1994.

“I have had a great six weeks at home. Things are going very well and I am excited about the opportunity to start playing some tournaments again,” Mickelson said on his Web site. “I’ll play the Bridgestone Invitational, PGA Championship, and The Barclays for sure, and if things continue to go well I’ll be able to play more.”

Mickelson, who won the WGC-CA Championship earlier this year, has played in all 10 previous Bridgestone Invitationals, with his best finish coming in 1999 when he tied for second. Tiger, by the way, is a six-time winner at the Bridgestone.

The PGA Championship, which begins Aug. 13 at Hazeltine National in suburban Minneapolis, is the final major of the season. Of course, neither Mickelson nor Woods has won a major this year. Lefty finished T7 at the PGA last year, an event he won in 2005.

The Barclays, at first-time site Liberty National outside New York City, is the first of four FedEx series events. Tiger may not play in that one, as he usually skips one FedEx event.
