Deutsche Bank Championship preview

It’s the second leg of the PGA Tour’s four-event playoffs this week with the at TPC Boston.

And there’s a tremendous field on hand this week. As one would expect, Tiger Woods is the overwhelming betting favorite on WagerWeb.com. He missed this event last year due to knee surgery but has one win in five starts, with the last coming in 2006. Tiger had a chance to win the Barclays last week but missed about a 10-foot putt on his 72nd hole in an attempt to force a playoff.

Steve Stricker, who is No. 2 in FedEx Cup points, seems to thrive in the PGA Tour’s playoffs. He has five top-10 finishes in the nine tournaments that have been staged since the tour started this format in 2007 He’s the only player to have played all 36 rounds possible. He also had a chance to force a playoff last week with eventual winner Heath Slocum but missed a putt of his own on the 72nd hole. Stricker is +2000 on WagerWeb.com this week and has finishes of T13, T9 and T7 over the last three years at TPC Boston.

Vijay Singh is the defending champ here, and he needs a good showing or he risks not advancing to next week’s BMW Championship. The Fijian is +2850 this week to defend; he won by five shots in 2008.

If you are looking for a decent long-shot bet, consider Aussie Robert Allenby. He is +5000 on WagerWeb.com but has three straight top-25 finishes following last week’s T15. He also has two top-10s and two other top-20s in five trips to TPC Boston.

The second favorite behind Tiger is not Phil Mickelson but Padraig Harrington at +1500. He jumped up to No. 14 in the FedEx Cup points with last week’s tie for second. The Irishman has now finished no worse than 10th in his past three starts. However, he has missed the cut in his last two appearances at the TPC Boston.

Mickelson is +2550 this week on WagerWeb.com. He was T52 last week after a disappointing 73rd-place finish at the PGA Championship.
