Champions Tour this week: SAS Championship
This is a first here at WagerWeb.com: a preview of a Champions Tour event. But if you can bet on it, you certainly want to know about it, so here we are.
This week’s SAS Championship will be held Friday-Sunday at Prestonwood Country Club in Cary, N.C. It does have an excellent field, with nine of the current top-10 on the 2009 senior tour money list and all but two 2009 tournament champions.
Despite Loren Roberts trailing Fred Funk in the points race (Charles Schwab Cup) on the Champions Tour, it is Roberts who is the WagerWeb.com favorite this week at +800, with Funk right behind at +900.
Roberts has been dominant of late, with nine top-6s in 11 events. He’s first in putting average and sand save percentage and fifth in all-around stats.
The third-favorite is tour rookie Tom Lehman, who is +1000 on WagerWeb.com. He is a five-time PGA Tour champion who became eligible for the Champions Tour when he turned 50 on March 7. In his first start on the Champions Tour he won the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf, in which he was teamed with Bernhard Langer. Lehman was the 2006 Ryder Cup team captain at Oakland Hills and was the 1996 British Open champion.
“Tom Lehman was a guy that we were not sure would compete. He’s competed in more PGA TOUR events this year than Champions Tour, so we are very happy that he has chosen to come to Cary,” said tournament director Jeff Kleiber.
He leads a field of stellar Champions Tour rookies this week, including Hal Sutton, David Frost, Bob Tway and Larry Mize. In addition, Tom Pernice will make his Champions Tour debut this week.
All previous SAS Championship winners are in the field, including defending champion Eduardo Romero.
Leonard Thompson, who received a sponsor’s exemption in the field, will be competing in his 1,000th career professional tournament.
Langer, who continues to lead the money list, will be absent from the tour for another week. Jay Haas, winner last week at the Greater Hickory Classic, is also absent.
