British Open tee times
If you are fan of golf, be prepared to get up early Thursday morning to catch the first round of the British Open. Unlike in many U.S. tournaments, the British Open doesn’t start the field off both the first and 10th tee in the first two rounds.
Padraig Harrington looks to win his third straight Claret Jug this weekend, but he has been struggling mightily this year.
In 2008, Harrington won $4.3 million, rose to No. 3 in the world and was named the PGA Tour Player of the Year. He became the first European in more than a century to win back-to-back British Opens and the only European to win consecutive majors in a season when he followed his Open triumph at Royal Birkdale in England with his PGA Championship victory.
Yet Harrington decided he needed to take apart his swing.
This year, the Irishman has missed five straight cuts and six out of the last seven. He finished T-35 at the Masters and missed the cut at the U.S. Open as he attempts to rework his mechanics. He still remains the third-favorite to win this week on WagerWeb.com at +1850.
“Sometimes you make short-term sacrifices for long-term gains,” Harrington said. “It’s not as easy to do your own thing and just work away at it. But going forward I’m going to be a better player and that’s all that counts to me.”
He is attempting to become the first man to win the Open Championship since Australian Peter Thomson from 1954-56.
“The last six months have been the worst in terms of performance I’ve had since I turned pro,” Harrington said. “There’s no doubt it could impinge on my performance at Turnberry. My confidence on the golf course, when I’m out there playing, has not been the best, because of my recent results.”
