Hurricane Ike affecting football, MLB
Hurricane Ike is bearing down on Texas, and this storm is having a much bigger impact on sporting events – and thus bettors at WagerWeb.com – than Gustav last weekend.
Since football is king in Texas, we’ll start there: The Texans’ game against the Baltimore Ravens was moved to Monday night at 8:30 p.m. EDT; the game was originally scheduled for 4:15 p.m. EDT Sunday.
The Ravens are scheduled to fly to Texas on Sunday afternoon.
“We understand completely why the change had to be made,” Ravens coach John Harbaugh said. “We’ll adjust our schedules.”
The Arkansas-Texas game, scheduled for Saturday at Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin, has been postponed. Both schools, which share a bye week on the final weekend of September, agreed to move the game to Saturday, Sept. 27. After being off this weekend, Arkansas will now face Alabama, Texas, Florida and Auburn in consecutive weeks. Yikes!

TCU and Oklahoma State have moved up the scheduled kickoff time for their respective home football games on Saturday: TCU has moved up its contest with Stanford from 7 EDT to 1 p.m. Oklahoma State will kick off its contest against Missouri State at 1:05 p.m., five hours ahead of the scheduled time.
The University of Houston moved its football game against Air Force on Saturday to Dallas and SMU’s Gerald J. Ford Stadium.
Baylor officials have moved the school’s game against Washington State to Friday night to avoid any complications caused by Ike. Kickoff is now set for 8:30 p.m. EDT.
Major League Baseball also is feeling the effects of Ike. The first two games of this weekend’s series between the Chicago Cubs and Houston Astros have been postponed.
Baseball officials also were anticipating that Sunday’s series finale also might be postponed. One of the scenarios under consideration was to play a doubleheader Monday, and make up the third game on Sept. 29 if it’s needed to decide a playoff berth. The Cubs and Astros have no common off days after Monday.
