Peter Forsberg will attempt his comeback with …
Both the Colorado Avalanche and Philadelphia Flyers had hopes that former NHL MVP Peter Forsberg was going to skate to their rescue at some point this winter, but both clubs can now focus on the NHL trade deadline to bolster their team as Forsberg says he isn’t coming back to the NHL this season.
The 35-year-old Forsberg has spent the last couple of weeks in Sweden, testing his ailing right foot to see whether he will make a last attempt at a comeback. Despite feeling better, Forsberg thinks he’s not yet ready for the NHL and has excluded a comeback overseas for this season.
“There won’t be any NHL this season, that’s totally clear,” Forsberg said.
He instead will skate with his hometown team, MODO Ornskoldsvik.

“Yes, I signed with MODO and hopefully I can play my first game (Feb. 12),” Forsberg said. “My foot is not 100 percent healed, but I’m optimistic. It definitely feels better than last year when I went to Colorado.”
He added that he remains open to play for the Swedish national team at the 2009 World Championship.
Forsberg made a late-season return last year to the Avalanche, but injuries kept him out of nine of 18 regular season NHL games and three of four games in the second round of the playoffs. He had said he would only return to the Avs or Flyers this year. Both teams are in need of forward depth with Colorado dealing with multiple injuries (Joe Sakic, Paul Stastny) and the Flyers losing the services of Daniel Briere for another month or so.
“I considered returning to the Avalanche, but they are struggling, and I didn’t want to take any space under the salary cap,” Forsberg said. “I didn’t want to return to the Flyers after all my foot problems the last time I was there.”
