Good news for Lightning: Lecavalier staying and not seriously hurt

Despite a recent report that, yes, the Tampa Bay Lightning and Montreal Canadiens did at least speak earlier this year about a potential trade of Lightning star Vincent Lecavalier, Bolts GM Brian Lawton put the rumors to rest this week.

“We’re not going to trade ,’’ Lawton said. “I’m going to say, ‘never,’ so I don’t have to deal with it.

“You can usually say you should never say never, but because people have taken such liberties with that whole deal, we never shopped . Did people ask about him? Of course. Who wouldn’t? Were we actively calling teams? No. We never did and we never will.”

The trade deadline is March 4. The media in Canada seem to not want this story to die.

“I don’t know why it keeps coming up – maybe the media a little bit in Montreal and Toronto. The last one had a little bit more legs than the others, but obviously now it’s over,” Lecavalier said.

Lecavalier, meanwhile, was injured in Tuesday’s game with the Oilers when he was hit by a shot from teammate Martin St. Louis. But there are no broken bones, and Lecavalier, with a team-best 25 goals, said he had “no doubt” he would play Friday against at Vancouver – bet on the game at WagerWeb.com.

“It’s sore, but it’s fine,” Lecavalier said. “I don’t want to sound like a trainer and knowing what I’m talking about, but the first 48 hours, you just ice it. It’s going to be sore, but it’s not a big deal. I just have to ice it and take care of it.”

Lecavalier said he was lucky he wasn’t facing St. Louis because the shot might have hit his toes or the side of his foot, both of which, he said, are more vulnerable to breaks.

Bolts coach Rick Tocchet said his star would play: “I don’t think it will be a problem that he can’t play. I don’t think there’s any structural damage. It’s just a matter of pain tolerance.”

The Lightning captain has goals and four assists in his past six games. The Lightning have just one win in that stretch.
