Boston Bruins at Carolina Hurricanes, Game 3 (series tied 1-1)

6 May 2009 200 views No Comment

It appears we might actually have a competitive series between the Boston Bruins and .

After getting crushed by Boston during the regular season and then losing Game 1, Carolina showed what it’s made of with a 3-0 win in Boston for Game 2. Yet even as the series moves to Raleigh, N.C.,  for tonight’s Game 3, the Canes are +100 underdogs on WagerWeb.com, with an over/under of 5 goals.

Before Carolina’s 3-0 Game 2 victory, Boston had won its first five playoff games by a combined 20-7, and didn’t allow more than two goals in any playoff game.

“I think when teams say they didn’t play well, like every other team that’s in the playoffs, there’s going to be some games where you don’t feel you’re as good as others — and that was in all areas,” Bruins coach Claude Julien said. “That’s why you hear coaches say it’s a mindset. I think that’s what it was. We were just OK and OK is not enough in the playoffs.”

The Bruins remain perfect on the penalty kill (10-for-10), while Carolina was perfect on the penalty kill at home in Round 1 against New Jersey (9-for-9). The Bruins enter tonight’s game on an 0-for-14 slump on the power play and have yet to score a power-play goal on the road in the playoffs.

The Bruins stressed in Tuesday’s practice for a need for more traffic in front of Carolina goalie , and getting more pucks to the goalmouth. Ward, the playoff MVP in 2006 when he backed the Canes to their only Stanley Cup, stopped 36 shots in Game 2.

“We have to be better at not making him look so good,” Julien said.

Carolina was 26-14-1 record in Raleigh this year and 2-1 at home against New Jersey in the conference quarterfinals. Boston was 24-13-4 as the guest this season to tie Detroit for the most road victories in the NHL. And the Bruins won both games in Montreal in Round 1.
