Winless Browns sticking with Quinn at QB for now

22 September 2009 101 views No Comment

The Cleveland Browns have not looked good so far this season, losing both games by double digits. In Sunday’s 27-6 loss to Denver, the Browns were outgained 449 to 200 and had just 11 first downs. And they turned the ball over three times on Sunday, now having scored just one offensive touchdown thus far in 2009.

So needless to say that quarterback is the target for all the frustration of Browns backers. But will remain the starter over Derek Anderson, at least for one more week. Coach Eric Mangini said so on Monday despite his team converting just 3-of-14 third downs against what isn’t a very good Denver defense. Quinn was 18-of-31 for 161 yards, with an interception, four sacks and a 58.7 passer rating.

“There were definitely some opportunities for him to get the ball to receivers that were open,
Mangini said. “There were some plays where I thought he had nice throws, but it’s consistency, it’s consistency, it’s consistency … first quarter, second quarter, third quarter, fourth quarter.”

Mangini acknowledged that the quarterback gets “a lion’s share of the credit and the lion’s share of the blame” but indicated that many things around Quinn didn’t go well, including protection breakdowns. The QB certainly wasn’t helped by the Browns’ rushing game, which had just nine yards in the second half (Denver had 133 rushing yards). RB Jamal Lewis was the Browns’ leading rusher with 14 carries for 38 yards (2.7 avg.). Cleveland has never had a 100‐yard individual rusher against the Broncos in 26 games played against Denver.

Quinn’s rating through two games has dipped to 66.9, which was 28th out of 32 quarterbacks in the NFL. The Browns face what looks like another loss this week against Baltimore, which has one of the best defenses in the NFL – bet on the Browns-Ravens at WagerWeb.com.
