Texans’ Schaub to start at QB vs. Packers
Barring any setbacks this week, Matt Schaub will return from injury for Houston and start Sunday in Green Bay (where it’s expected to be about 12 degrees), with the Packers 6-point favorites on WagerWeb.com.
Schaub has been sidelined since Week 9 with a knee injury, although he was an active backup to Sage Rosenfels for Monday’s win against Jacksonville.
“I think if everything goes OK this week the expectations are that [Schaub] goes back into his role as our starter,” Texans coach Gary Kubiak said, adding that Schaub was nearly ready to play last week. “I was comparing his work before he got injured to how he was practicing last week and I saw a little bit of a difference Wednesday and Thursday. I thought he closed the gap on Friday when he practiced more. I’m expecting him to close the gap even more this week.”
After losing his first two starts against Baltimore and Indianapolis, Rosenfels has helped the Texans defeat the Cleveland Browns and Jacksonville to improve their record to 5-7. But there is basically no hope for the playoffs.
Kubiak indicated that Schaub has been lobbying hard to get back on the field.

“I mean, he was beating my door down last week telling me he was ready,” said Kubiak, adding he wanted to give Schaub one more week of rest. “There are players that don’t think they can go that you have to push to go.”
Kubiak said that while Schaub has been cleared by doctors, there’s no way to know for sure how Schaub’s left knee will respond to being hit until it actually happens.
“That’s not something you’re going to find out on the practice field,” Kubiak said. “You just trust the doctors and the times they’ve dealt with players with that situation.”
Schaub will go against a Packers defense that has surrendered 86 points over the past two weeks. And he has just a 74.7 quarterback rating with 4 TDs and 6 INTs on the road. Before sustaining a knee injury against Minnesota, however, Schaub had led the Texans to 29.8 points per game in his last four starts.
