NFL opener: Tennessee Titans at Pittsburgh Steelers
Football is back! And as usual, the defending Super Bowl champions are featured on the Thursday night telecast, with the Steelers hosting the Titans.
Pittsburgh is a 6.5-point favorite on WagerWeb.com.
These two met in Week 16 last year with home-field advantage in the AFC playoffs on the line, with the Titans winning 31-14 in Nashville. Kerry Collins remained undefeated in his career against the Steelers, improving to 3-0, as he completed 20 of 29 passes for 216 yards and a touchdown. Tennessee put up more points against Pittsburgh’s No. 1 ranked defense than any other team did all season, then celebrated on the sidelines with running back LenDale White and linebacker Keith Bulluck stomping on Pittsburgh’s Terrible Towels. Think the Steelers remember that?
Of course, Pittsburgh got the last laugh last year, getting home-field in the AFC title game after the Ravens upset Tennessee in the playoffs. In fact, the Titans haven’t won a game since that beating of the Steelers on Dec. 21.

“We’ve had a bad taste in our mouth ever since,” Titans defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch said. “Even though we went 13-3 last season, nobody feels like we accomplished anything. For us personally, our fans, our coaches, the way the season ended last year was a tremendous disappointment and a tremendous letdown.”
In terms of overall personal, the Titans lost star defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth from last year (to the Redskins) but did sign WR Nate Washington away from Pittsburgh. But really both teams are about the same as what they were last year.
Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger needs 26 yards passing to reach 15,000 passing yards in his career, becoming just the second QB (Terry Bradshaw) in team history to accomplish the feat. In last year’s game with Tennessee, Big Ben passed for 329 yards and two touchdowns.
Of course Tennessee will try and run the ball all night with the AFC’s No. 1 rushing tandem — Chris Johnson and LenDale White — who combined for 2,001 yards last season Pittsburgh has a record of 3-3 vs. Tennessee in Pittsburgh since the Titans relocated in 1997, including victories in the past two games at Heinz Field. Pittsburgh looks for its seventh straight win on Kickoff Weekend, which is the longest in the NFL. The Steelers have won 38 home openers, most among AFC teams.
