Ravens lose Clayton for 6 weeks, Terry for season

It’s been a lousy week of camp for the Baltimore Ravens.

For sure this team can’t afford to lose any receivers, as the Ravens have arguably the worst group of pass-catchers in the NFL. But , a potential starter, could miss the next six weeks of camp because of a hamstring injury.

That timetable should have him back just over a week before the Ravens’ season opener against Kansas City – bet on the game at WagerWeb.com. That means Demetrius Williams will run with newly unretired Derrick Mason as the two starting receivers for the time being.

Clayton, who caught 41 passes for 695 yards and three touchdowns last season, injured the same hamstring three times in the first 16 months of his NFL career. He hurt the hamstring again during practice on Sunday but is adamant that he hasn’t torn it.

Clayton is taking precautions with his injury while he’s not practicing and does not believe that he should return before he is fully healed.

“It’s sensitive,” said Clayton. “We know right now it is preseason and we know how important it is.”

The injury news is worse for offensive lineman Adam Terry. He went underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee in the offseason and is still experiencing lingering problems with the knee, and the club is leaning toward shelving the fifth-year offensive tackle for the entire 2009 season.

“It just looks right now that he’s got some new issues with the knee from a healing perspective,” coach John Harbaugh said. “So it looks like he’s going to be out for the year.”

Terry made seven starts at right tackle last season, was expected to challenge first-round pick Michael Oher as the starter at that position. Instead, it looks as if Oniel Cousins, Joe Reitz and maybe even guard Marshal Yanda could compete for the starting right tackle job. Oher no doubt will win it.

It’s a significant blow to an offensive line in need of depth, and it prompted the Ravens to immediately work out two offensive linemen Tuesday.
