Only with the Raiders: Oakland’s coach facing a suspension?

5 October 2009 75 views No Comment

The Oakland Raiders are probably the worst-run franchise in all of pro football, so it seems fitting that their head coach might be facing a league suspension normally reserved for law-breaking players.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell says he plans to talk to Oakland coach about a training-camp incident that resulted in a former assistant coach accusing Cable of breaking his jaw while assaulting him.

Randy Henson is accusing Cable of punching him and breaking his jaw in an Aug. 5 incident.

Henson’s lawyer told the NFL Network that his client has met with authorities to discuss the matter. While criminal charges haven’t been filed, it is being reported that Goodell will consider punishment, if warranted.

“This is not getting pushed under the rug,” Goodell said.

Cable has said that “nothing happened,” however.

“When all the facts come out, everything will be fine,” Cable said.

But Hanson’s lawyer, John McGuinn, called it a “textbook case of felony assault,” according to the NFL Network and said three coaches witnessed the incident. Hanson, who McGuinn said has been told to stay away from the team’s facility, was interviewed for more than an hour in California by a Napa Valley detective and turned over medical records which detailed his fractured jaw, according to the lawyer.

The Raiders visit the New York Giants on Sunday – bet on the game at WagerWeb.com. Since the NFL’s headquarters are located in New York, it could present an opportunity for Goodell and Cable to meet.

If arrested, Cable could also face a suspension from the NFL for violation of the personal conduct policy.
Under the policy, coaches and executives are held to the same standard, if not a higher one, than the players.

Don’t completely rule out the Raiders firing Cable – they cut the cord on Lane Kiffin after just four games last year, and owner Al Davis certainly could use a possible arrest as cause for firing Cable and not paying his contract. The Raiders have regressed each week and were defeated 29-6 by the Houston Texans on Sunday.
