NFL Week 16 odds: Indianapolis at Kansas City
With what was expected of the Colts this season – not much – it’s fairly stunning they can clinch a playoff spot Sunday with a win over hapless Kansas City.
Indianapolis lost its chance at the AFC South title with last week’s 29-17 loss to Houston. Indianapolis rookie Andrew Luck had two touchdown passes, but was held to 186 yards on a season-low 13 completions in 27 attempts. The Colts (9-5) had won seven of their last eight games. However, the seven victories had come against teams that entered Week 15 with a combined 29-62 record. The one loss in that span came against New England in similar fashion to Sunday’s setback, a 59-24 blowout on Nov. 18.
The Chiefs fell to 2-12 with a 15-0 home loss to Oakland. Brady Quinn threw for 136 yards and one interception on 18-of-32 efficiency for the Chiefs (2-12), who have dropped 10 of their last 11 outings. Dexter McCluster had seven receptions for 59 yards in the setback, Kansas City’s first by shutout since Dec. 12, 2010 at San Diego in a 31-0 loss. Quinn was injured in the game and likely will give way to third-stringer Ricky Stanzi on Sunday.
The Colts are a lot more effective when they can establish an even run-pass balance. As promising as Luck looks, he will still make some rookie mistakes and those mistakes can be limited when the defense is not able to dictate play selection by down and distance. Rookie RB Vick Ballard had his best game in Week 15, gaining 105 yards on 5.8 yards per carry against a stout Houston defense. The Colts need his production to take some pressure off Luck and their passing game.
