NFL Week 13 odds: NY Giants at Washington

The Giants, off their best game of the season, look for a sweep of the Redskins – after Washington did it to New York last season – and move another step closer to winning the NFC East in this week’s Monday night game.

Back in Week 7, the Giants won 27-23 at home over Robert Griffin III and Co. Eli Manning threw a pinpoint 77-yard scoring pass to Victor Cruz with 1:13 to play for the winning score. It was Eli’s his eighth game-winning drive since 2011, the most in the NFL in that time span.

Manning’s winning throw came two plays and 19 seconds after Griffin capped what was a potential winning, 77-yard drive with a 30-yard touchdown toss to Santana Moss. The rookie had kept the drive alive with a 19-yard pass off a desperate scramble on a fourth-and-10 play deep in his own territory, and a 24-yard run on the next play. RG3 ran for 89 yards and passed for 258 and two touchdowns on the day.

The Giants (7-4) lead the NFC East by two games over Dallas (5-6) and Washington (5-6).

The Redskins have won two in a row – both against NFC East opponents – and have been led by RG3. The No. 2 overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft has thrown eight touchdowns in the past two games and is the only rookie in NFL history with back-to-back games with four passing touchdowns. In the team’s past two games, Griffin has completed 34 of 43 passes (79.1 percent) for 511 yards with eight touchdowns and one interception for a 146.1 passer rating.

Although Washington is allowing 301.4 passing yards per game for the second-worst mark in the NFL, the Skins think their defense matches up well against Manning. There may be something to that claim since the two-time Super Bowl MVP had only one touchdown to eight interceptions in a five-game stretch against the Redskins, including last month’s contest before his strike to Cruz.

The pass to Cruz was Manning’s last TD before a three-game stretch without one. The quarterback emphatically ended his drought last Sunday with three scores and 249 yards as New York returned from the bye with a dominant 38-10 victory over Green Bay. If Manning had a tired arm, the bye week might have been the perfect cure. Manning went 5-of-9 on throws more than 10 yards downfield in Week 12 against the Packers after failing to complete more than 36.4 of those throws in each of his last three games before the bye week.

The Giants have recorded 16 sacks when rushing four or fewer over their last six games, with Jason Pierre-Paul and Justin Tuck accounting for 7.0. The Giants recorded three sacks with such pressure in their first five games, with Pierre-Paul and Tuck accounting for 1.0. When the pass rush is going well, it protects the back end of this pass defense because the DBs do not have to hold their coverages too long. The Giants can exploit this Redskins O-line, but they must also set the edge, show good gap discipline and not let Griffin III get outside on scrambles.

The Giants had a five-game win streak at FedEx Field snapped with a season-opening 28-14 loss last year.
