Michael Vick to Ravens?
Newly reinstated QB Michael Vick says he is close to signing with a team, although just for the record he never said NFL team.
But assuming Vick doesn’t plan on playing in the upstart UFL, which team is ready to take the plunge? I wrote on WagerWeb.com earlier this week that it most likely would be the Patriots, Jaguars or Redskins to take the plunge, but it appears I was a few miles off when I said Washington.
The Baltimore Ravens appear to be the leading contender for Vick.
Baltimore coach John Harbaugh acknowledged that the Ravens have considered Vick.
“We’ve had long discussions about (Vick) and we have a feeling about how he would impact our team and not impact our team,” he said.
Reportedly Harbaugh and GM Ozzie Newsome have discussed the possibility of bringing in Vick to training camp. Vick can play in the final two preseason games and participate in all team activities before and after but not play in regular-season games until commissioner Roger Goodell approves it, which is supposed to come by Week 6 at the latest.
Currently the three quarterbacks on the Baltimore depth chart are starter Joe Flacco, Troy Smith, and John Beck. But the team has no receivers to speak of. I’m not saying Vick will play receiver, but he could be a bit of a Wildcat threat and used on screen passes, things like that.

In a way, this might be good for Vick, as it’s not far from his hometown in Virginia, as well as Virginia Tech, where he went to school. That kind of familiarity might be good or perhaps it might be the opposite – maybe Vick needs to get away from his past.
By the way, here are the only teams as of this writing that have not made public comments about Vick: Arizona Cardinals, Cleveland Browns, Green Bay Packers, Houston Texans, Pittsburgh Steelers, Carolina Panthers, San Diego Chargers.
More than a dozen other NFL teams have said publicly they won’t pursue Vick, including the New York Giants, New York Jets, Dallas Cowboys, San Francisco 49ers and Miami Dolphins.
After New England’s first practice of training camp, Patriots coach Bill Belichick was asked about Vick’s possible return to the NFL.
“Michael is an outstanding player, hasn’t played in a couple of years,” Belichick said. “He’s a tremendous athlete. Where exactly he is right now, I don’t know.”
