Thursday a big day for Vick

Michael Vick is expected to play the entire second half tonight in the Eagles’ final preseason game, but that’s not the most important thing that happened to the QB on Thursday.

No, Vick reportedly met Thursday morning with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell in the New York area before the game with the Jets – bet on it at WagerWeb.com. Goodell could inform Vick when he’ll be eligible to return to play without conditions in the NFL.

On Wednesday, Tony Dungy, Vick’s former mentor, said he thought Goodell would rule on Vick’s status “soon.” ESPN has reported the decision will come before the weekend, and it’s likely Vick will be able to return by Week 3.

One of the reasons the Eagles view it as important to know about Vick’s status as soon as possible is teams must have their final 53-man rosters in place by Saturday.

As it stands, the Eagles have Vick on the roster as well as quarterback A.J. Feeley, who could have trade value. If Vick is granted full reinstatement right away, it would free Philadelphia to trade Feeley while keeping Donovan McNabb and Kevin Kolb as its starting and backup quarterbacks.

Vick could be placed on what’s called the exempt list and not count against the 53-man total. But that would prohibit him from practicing, which would slow his assimilation and lessen his usefulness to the Eagles.

The Eagles, who traditionally sit their starters in the finale tune-up, are expected to start Kolb at quarterback for tonight’s game. Kolb will be relieved by Vick to start the second half.

The Jets didn’t do any game planning for Vick, according to Rex Ryan, who wants to keep it vanilla so he can evaluate players.

“I’m not really looking forward to it because I know who he is,” Ryan said. “If this was a regular-season game, you don’t sleep at night. You have nightmares about this guy running all over your team.”
