Lions say Stafford could play Sunday vs. Steelers

So is it a dislocated kneecap or isn’t it? The Detroit Lions aren’t saying too much about the injury that QB suffered in Sunday’s loss to the Bears other than calling him officially “day-to-day” with the Pittsburgh Steelers coming to Motown on Sunday – Detroit is a 10.5-point betting underdog on WagerWeb.com.

Stafford had to leave Sunday’s game after being brought down by Bears defensive lineman Adewale Ogunleye. ESPN reported that Stafford’s injury was a dislocated kneecap that popped back in while he was on the sideline, an injury that could cost him a game or two. Stafford had a similar injury to the same knee before his senior season in high school and missed a couple of games. He hasn’t sat out a game since then.

“He twisted his knee a little bit,” coach Jim Schwartz said. “Obviously we’ll have to do a lot of tests and those kind of things. He wasn’t able to really get it warmed back up again, and we didn’t want to put him back in the game. … He’s day to day and we’ll know more on Wednesday.”

Schwartz stuck by one of his policies, limiting information he shares about injuries, by declining to say if Stafford’s kneecap is dislocated. Reportedly Stafford will get a second opinion of the MRI on his knee from Dr. James Andrews in Alabama.

Daunte Culpepper replaced Stafford against the Bears and likely would start against the Steelers if Stafford can’t play. But even if Stafford can’t practice Wednesday after a day off Tuesday, Schwartz said that wouldn’t rule him out (according to NFL policy, coaches don’t have to make any official declarations about injuries until Wednesday).

”I wouldn’t want to put that set of rules out there before him,” Schwartz said.

The Lions are making one move in the wake of their special teams disaster against the Bears. Schwartz said that rookie Derrick Williams will become the kickoff returner and “remain so until further notice.”

Williams replaces fellow rookie Aaron Brown, who has struggled the past three games.
