Lions lose best defensive player indefinitely

22 September 2009 95 views No Comment

This might be the week that Detroit Lions end their 19-game losing streak, which stretches back to the end of the 2007 season.

Really, it might be: they are only 6.5-point home underdogs on WagerWeb.com to the Washington Redskins, who barely beat the Rams in D.C. last week.

However, Detroit’s chances will go down considerably if star linebacker can’t play and it doesn’t seem like he will. Sims has a “fairly significant” right shoulder injury and is likely to miss some time, Lions coach Jim Schwartz said.

Sims hurt the shoulder late in the fourth quarter Sunday attempting to make a tackle on Minnesota Vikings running back Chester Taylor along the sideline. Sims landed awkwardly and immediately grabbed at his right shoulder.

“Whether it’s a week-to-week thing, whether it’s longer than that, we’ll find out more in the next couple days — maybe not even the next couple days,” Schwartz said. “It might be something that maybe takes a little bit of time to sort of see where it is. But it’s not a day-to-day thing.”

Sims has 14 tackles (eight solo) and a fumble recovery through two games. The 24-year-old has started every game at linebacker — 50 straight — since being drafted No. 9 overall by the Lions in the 2006 NFL Draft. He recorded 125 tackles during his rookie season in 2006, had 144 in ‘07 and 113 in ‘08. His backups are rookie DeAndre Levy and second-year player Jordon Dizon. If Levy gets the start, that would give the Lions three rookie starters on defense: Defensive tackle Sammie Hill and safety Louis Delmas have started the first two games.
