Lions (0-15) at Packers (5-10)
On a Sunday filled with games full of playoff significance, why did I choose to write about one featuring the Lions and Packers, two teams who have nothing to play for on the final Sunday of the NFL regular season?
Because we may be about to witness history in the inept Lions. But then you probably are well aware that Detroit can finish as the first 0-16 team in NFL history (or 0-15-1, for that matter) and first winless club since the 1976 expansion Tampa Bay Bucs.
Detroit is an 11-point “favorite” to complete its trip to infamy on WagerWeb.com.
At least the Lions get the Packers on a short week, as Green Bay coughed up another fourth-quarter lead in losing to the Bears on Monday night. But the Pack have won eight of the past nine meetings in this series, including a 48-25 victory in Week 2 when Aaron Rodgers threw for 328 yards and three TDs. Actually, that game was close before the Lions self-destructed (shocker) in the fourth quarter.
The Lions are 1-22 since the middle of last season and haven’t won since Dec. 23, 2007, beating the Chiefs. So they already have lost 16 straight games and have been outscored 520-260. If the Lions give up 48 points — as they did in Week 2 — they will break the 1981 Baltimore Colts NFL record (533) for points allowed in a season by one point. Detroit is last in the league in points allowed (32.1), rushing yards allowed (169.5) and total yards allowed (399.1) per game while recording an NFL-low four interceptions.

Did I mention that the Lions have not won in Green Bay since 1991 (a place they visit every season)? The Lions’ 16-game slide there is the second-longest active road losing streak in the NFL, eclipsed only by their 18-game skid in Washington dating back to 1939.
“It’s our Super Bowl,” said rookie Kevin Smith, still waiting for his first NFL win.
“I think we’re going to shock a lot of people with a great game. I feel like we’re going to win,” said Lions CB Travis Fisher, who also has some beachfront property in Kansas to sell you.
Fisher’s confidence aside, there is a chance here. Green Bay isn’t exactly rolling, having lost five in a row and blowing late leads in three of the past four games. The Packers haven’t lost six in a row since 1988.
Detroit does have a few offensive weapons in Calvin Johnson, who has had a receiving touchdown in five straight road games and had more than 100 yards and a TD in the first meeting. Smith leads the team with 884 yards and seven rushing TDs, solid numbers for a rookie. Last week Smith ran for 111 yards against New Orleans and now faces a Green Bay defense that has given up 133.9 yards per game on the ground this year. So if Detroit can keep its defense off the field …
It is supposed to be cold and very windy with some snow on Sunday, which won’t exactly help the dome-team Lions. The over/under on WagerWeb.com is 43.
By the way, the media coverage at this game will probably be bigger than nearly any other game on Sunday.
“This is history,” said Steve Sabol, president of NFL Films, who is triple-staffing the game with six camera operators. “We’re covering it almost as if it were a playoff game.”
