Closer look at Green Bay Packers’ 2009 schedule
When you look at Green Bay’s 2009 schedule, all eyes immediately turn to that Week 8 game against the Vikings, which could see Brett Favre return to Lambeau Field for the first time as an opponent.
In fact, the Favre family reportedly has already reserved dozens of hotel rooms in Green Bay for that weekend, so it seems fairly obvious that Favre will be under center for the Vikings that day. Think that game will be covered at all by the media? ESPN probably will have a special each day that week.
The Packers have five games against playoff teams from a year ago (Week 4 at Minnesota, Week 8 vs. Minnesota, Week 13 vs. Baltimore, Week 15 at Pittsburgh and Week 17 at Arizona). But their schedule ranks as the third-easiest in the league.
For the first time since 2003, the Packers will not play a division opponent in the season’s final three weeks. Also, Green Bay’s bye week – in Week 5 – is the earliest bye for the team since 1999, when it had its bye in Week 4.
The Packers face five of the league’s top 10 defenses from a year ago: Pittsburgh (No. 1), Baltimore (No. 2), Minnesota (No. 6, twice), Dallas (No. 8 ) and Tampa Bay (No. 9).
“I’m excited for the 2009 regular season – we have a great opportunity starting with two home games and three early division games,” Coach Mike McCarthy said. “Playing on Monday night after Thanksgiving will give us a chance for another break before the final month. Historically we’ve been strong in December, and we’ll look to rise to that challenge.”
