Dolphins won’t have Brown on Thursday at minimum
Miami Dolphins running back Ronnie Brown, who is having one of his best seasons as a pro, left Sunday’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with a sprained ankle and almost certainly won’t play Thursday against Carolina – bet on the game at WagerWeb.com.
According to some reports, Brown also has a foot injury that has the team very concerned. Brown went down midway through the third quarter after he broke a long run and then fumbled fighting for extra yardage.
Unlike in 2006, when an ACL tear shut him down for the year, the sprained ankle Brown sustained Sunday isn’t expected to end his season.
“Obviously, I can’t really talk about it right now,” Brown said. “We’ve still got to do some tests and see what happens. We did some X-rays. I don’t think it’s too bad.”
Brown, who rushed for 82 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries before leaving the game, is the Dolphins’ leading rusher. He has gained 648 yards and averaged 4.4 yards per carry this season.
Perhaps most important, he is a dual threat to run and pass out of the Dolphins’ Wildcat formation.
The former Auburn star has battled through injuries during his time as a pro, including that ACL injury that forced him to miss most of ’06.
Without him, the Dolphins didn’t use the Wildcat again or sub in Pat White for the “Pistol” offense during the second half of the Bucs game. With Brown likely sidelined, the pressure to carry the offense likely will fall on the shoulders of Ricky Williams, who ran for 102 yards on 20 carries Sunday. Williams handles the direct snap out of the Wildcat from time to time, but the coaches are more comfortable with Brown as the trigger man because of his instincts and superior throwing arm.
Behind Brown and Williams the Dolphins have Lex Hilliard, and rookie tailback Kory Sheets.
