Detroit Lions (1-7) at Minnesota Vikings (7-1)

13 November 2009 66 views No Comment

This obviously looks like a blowout in the making, especially with Minnesota entering off a bye week. But know that Detroit led Minnesota 10-7 at the half earlier this year (but lost 27-13) and nearly beat the Vikings both times in last year’s 0-16 season.

Brett Favre completed 23-of-27 passes for 155 yards and two touchdowns in that first game, while Adrian Peterson rushed for 92 yards, and his 27-yard touchdown run in the third quarter gave Minnesota the lead for good. Favre has only three interceptions, his lowest first-half total since his first full season as starter in 1993.

WR Calvin Johnson is Detroit’s best offensive weapon, but in his first game back from a knee injury, he was held in check against the Seahawks last week with just two catches for 27 yards. He will need to have a huge game for Detroit to have a chance — Johnson has a touchdown in three consecutive games against the Vikings. Rookie QB Matthew Stafford also will need a big effort, but he has 12 picks in six starts and had five last week in Seattle. Stafford has a 112.5 passer rating (4 TD, 0 INT) in the first quarter this season (5th-best of any QB) and a 39.0 rating (1 TD, 11 INT) in quarters 2 through 4 combined.

The Lions, who have lost 16 road games in a row overall, have lost 18 of their last 20 games against Vikings and 11 straight at Metrodome. Of those 11 losses since 1997, six were by seven points or less. Favre has never lost a home game to the Lions in 17 all-time contests (includes playoffs). That’s simply amazing.
