Cowboys lose rookie Jones for year

21 November 2008 110 views No Comment

One of the most electrifying rookies in the NFL will have his season cut short as Dallas running back/return man Felix Jones will have surgery to repair a torn ligament beneath his left big toe and has been placed on IR.

This guy had big-play ability like no one else on the Cowboys or in the NFL, for that matter. Jones had missed the previous four games with his hamstring injury. He suffered the toe injury while rehabbing his hamstring during the bye week.

Dallas hosts the 49ers this week and is a 10-point favorite on WagerWeb.com

The No. 22 overall pick in the draft showed flashes of brilliance in his six games. He had 266 yards on 30 carries (8.9 yards per carry, that’s impressive) and scored four touchdowns, including the Cowboys’ first regular-season kickoff return touchdown since 2003 in a Week 2 win over Philadelphia.

He actually had returned to practice Wednesday, going through light individual drills while the team tried to determine his physical limitations.

Now Marion Barber will truly carry the load. He had 24 of the team’s 28 rushes in Sunday night’s 14-10 win over Washington. Rookie Tashard Choice will be the primary backup. He had one carry for 6 yards against Washington and has 13 carries for 72 yards on the season.

Meanwhile, Dallas also will be without WR Miles Austin for 2-4 weeks. This is relevant to Jones because Austin had taken his place on kick returns. Austin suffered a sprained lateral collateral ligament in his knee against the Redskins and was sharing the No. 3 receiver role with Patrick Crayton.

On the season he has 12 catches for 255 yards and three touchdowns. Austin made a clutch third-and-7 catch in the fourth quarter that led to the game-winning touchdown against the Redskins on Sunday.

Candidates to fill in on kickoff returns are receiver Isaiah Stanback, rookie cornerback Orlando Scandrick and possibly rookie cornerback Mike Jenkins.
