Despite rumors, no leader yet in Browns’ QB race
Remember all those reports about a week ago that said that Brady Quinn would eventually be named the starting quarterback for the Cleveland Browns this year?
Apparently not true.
When new coach Eric Mangini made it a point last week to say that Quinn was slightly ahead of Anderson in the quarterback competition that sent reporters scurrying.
However, Mangini made it a point to clarify the situation prior to practice on Wednesday.
“Quinn was just the starting rep the starting day,” he said. “(Quinn and Anderson) both had exactly the same amount of reps. They have had the exact amount of reps in every practice.”

Mangini added that although Quinn got starting reps during minicamp, Anderson is going to share reps with Quinn going forward.
(By the way, WagerWeb.com already has Week 1 odds available on NFL games, and the Browns are 2.5-point home underdogs to the Vikings.)
Quinn and Anderson have been together with the Browns since 2007, but this is the first time both players have competed actively for the starting job. Quinn finally saw his first action in 2008 after Anderson struggled. But Quinn was inconsistent in three starts before suffering a season-ending finger injury.
Mangini said Browns coaches will track “everything” the quarterbacks do during this open competition for the starting job and that he has no timetable in naming his starter for the 2009 season.
“I think that who should be the starter will reveal itself through the competition,” he says, “and that’s what is important to me — making sure that we make the right decision, not putting any timeline on it.”
Cleveland is 24-40 in the past four seasons, including 4-12 in 2008, and has only one playoff appearance (2002) since the franchise’s NFL rebirth in 1999. The team was 31st in total offense last season, thanks to a passing game ranked second worst and a running game ranked seventh worst.
