Closer look at Buffalo Bills’ 2009 schedule
The Buffalo Bills have the NFL’s sixth-toughest schedule in 2009 if you go by the opposing teams’ cumulative records in 2008. That’s the bad news. The good news is that two teams the Bills are chasing in the AFC East, the Dolphins and Patriots, have the toughest and third-toughest schedules, respectively.
Only three of this year’s opponents are coming off losing seasons, and 11 of them won at least nine games. Six posted 11 or more wins, and five of the six (minus New England) made the playoffs.
The Bills will host the Jets on Dec. 3 for the second regular-season game in the Toronto Series; Buffalo beat Miami 16-3 last season. Buffalo holds a 4-1 record against New York in primetime games. The Thursday night game is the fourth for the Bills in team history and first since 2001.
Meanwhile, the Bills will make their third Monday Night Football appearance on Kickoff Weekend in team history when they travel to New England to open the 2009 season. Of course, that is the debut of Terrell Owens for Buffalo, but the team won’t have starting running back Marshawn Lynch, who was suspended for the first three games of the season. Lynch, barring appeal, also will miss home games with the Bucs and Saints. That’s the first-ever visit to Buffalo for Tampa Bay.
Buffalo’s divisional games are split by the bye-week break. But we should know if the Bills will be in the division race quickly as their first three AFC East games are on the road. Buffalo was winless in the AFC East last year.
