Bucs pull a shocker: Fire offensive coordinator
OK, if you are a first-year offensive coordinator in the NFL, aren’t you at least supposed to get a chance to see how your offense fares in the regular season before you are reviewed by your head coach?
Apparently not in Tampa Bay.
The Bucs announced they had fired offensive coordinator Jeff Jagodzinski in a statement Thursday morning and said quarterbacks coach Greg Olson will take over as coordinator. Morris cited Jagodzinski’s inadequate attention to detail and lack of “direction” as the reasons for the sudden move just 10 days before the Bucs’ regular season opener.
“We needed more direction,” Bucs coach Raheem Morris said. “We needed more precision. [We weren't] getting it at the time, so you make the change.”

The change comes on the eve of the Bucs’ preseason finale against the Houston Texans – bet on the game at WagerWeb.com. Tampa Bay opens the regular season Sept. 13 at home against the Dallas Cowboys and is a 5-point underdog on WagerWeb.com.
Olson joined the Buccaneers as quarterbacks coach in 2008 and was retained when the team promoted Morris to head coach. Olson previously served as the offensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions in 2005 and the St. Louis Rams from 2006-07. He has also previously served as the quarterbacks coach for the Lions, Chicago Bears and San Francisco 49ers.
This move makes Morris seem a little wishy-washy, because he is who hired the guy not too many months ago. And it’s been a lousy year for Jagodzinski, as he was canned as the head coach at Boston College after interviewing for the Jets’ top job.
Jagodzinski was well-regarded in his time at Boston College, where he helped develop Atlanta quarterback Matt Ryan; before that he spent a year as Green Bay’s offensive coordinator. The decision comes only days after Morris decided to start quarterback Byron Leftwich.
Three days ago, the Chiefs fired offensive coordinator Chan Gailey. But at least in that situation, head coach Todd Haley has an offensive background and is taking over plays. The Bucs’ Morris was a defensive coach before being hired as head coach.
How does this affect betting on the Bucs? Expect the team to be very ill-prepared for at least the first few weeks of the season – so jump on the opposition.
