Strongest sign yet that Favre’s coming back

Even if you are in the minority and think that Brett Favre isn’t going to play again this football season, the news Monday should change your mind.

That news: Favre is scheduled to meet Tuesday with Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala., about surgery to repair a partially torn biceps tendon in his right shoulder. If the surgery goes well, Favre will sign with the and certainly change their futures odds on WagerWeb.com.

The operation is expected to be performed later this week, and Favre will undergo 6-8 weeks of rehabilitation. That timetable would allow Favre to miss the offseason practices of the Vikings (as he prefers) but would allow him to participate in training camp.

Favre retired from the Jets in February, when it was revealed he played the end of last season with the injury. It was said then if he were to play again, surgery would be needed. The torn biceps tendon is one of several sources of pain in Favre’s shoulder. But if cutting the biceps tendon doesn’t eliminate the pain, Favre would have to consider whether other more complex surgical procedures are worth undergoing.

That could hinder chances of him signing with the Vikings.

Favre struggled big time down the stretch last season with the Jets, as they finished 1-4, a skid that left them short of the playoffs. He threw two TDs and nine INTs in that five-game stretch.

Bus Cook, the agent for Favre, said this weekend “there’s absolutely no substance to all the speculation” surrounding the veteran quarterback’s un-retirement.

Cook did acknowledge that Favre has changed his mind in the past, and might do so again.

“He may look up next week and say, ‘I want a job,’” Cook said. “But as of right now, he’s retired. That’s it.”

If Favre does come back, the Vikings probably jump the Bears as the favorites again in the NFC North. Chicago opened as the early favorite with the addition of Jay Cutler. A Favre return also would mean there could be three new starting QBs in the division this year, assuming Matthew Stafford wins the Lions job.
