Brady Quinn out, Derek Anderson in for Browns

Once upon a time Brady Quinn was the future for the Cleveland Browns. Now who knows if Quinn will even be on this team next year.

Quinn beat out for the starting job this preseason, but an ugly start to the year has led coach Eric Mangini to replace Quinn with Anderson starting Sunday against the Bengals – Cleveland is a 5-point home underdog on WagerWeb.com.

Mangini said “giving Derek the opportunity is something I think will help us offensively.” He said Anderson’s performance on third down Sunday in a 34-3 loss to Baltimore — including 3-of-4 on a field goal drive — helped him clinch the job. He said he needs to improve on throwing interceptions, after throwing three in Baltimore.

“I’m not saying it’s all Brady,” said Mangini. “Derek did some things that were positive and that’s what it’s based on.”

Quinn threw for 400 yards, one TD and three INTs while losing all three of his starts this year, and only St. Louis has scored fewer points than Cleveland. Quinn completed six of eight passes for 34 yards and an interception Sunday and was benched at halftime and replaced by Anderson, who went on to complete 11 of 19 passes for 92 yards but threw the three interceptions.

Anderson reached the Pro Bowl in 2007, throwing 29 TDs while winning 10 of 15 starts, but he wasn’t the same last year, eventually losing the job to Quinn – and both got hurt near the end of the year. The upside of Anderson is that he likes to go downfield more than Quinn and has a better rapport with star WR Braylon Edwards.

Maybe seeing Cincy across the line will spark Anderson this week. He has eight TD passes in three career meetings against the Bengals, including a game in 2007 when Anderson threw for 328 yards and five TDs against Cincy in a 51-45 victory.
