Brady Quinn leading for Browns’ QB job

If you are a Cleveland Browns fan, you probably didn’t take a whole lot of positives from the team’s 17-0 loss in the preseason opener to Green Bay.

However, one bright spot was the play of quarterback , although it didn’t show up on the scoreboard. The former Notre Dame star, of course, is battling Derek Anderson to be the Cleveland starter this season.

Quinn’s first drive against the Packers was solid, as he led the team to field goal range. However, a penalty negated the successful kick, and then Phil Dawson missed the retry from 41 yards. Quinn’s second drive should have ended in a touchdown, but Braylon Edwards dropped a ball in the end zone (does Edwards dropping the ball sound at all familiar, Browns fans?). Then Quinn followed with a bad pass for Edwards, and it was intercepted.

Most reports out of Cleveland say Quinn (7-for-11, 68 yards) has taken the lead over Anderson (0-for-2, one interception). In fairness, Anderson played six snaps compared to Quinn’s 17. Look for Anderson to probably start the next exhibition game against Detroit – bet on it at WagerWeb.com. Plus Anderson was hit as he threw on both attempts.

“I’m going to wait and see where we are,” coach Eric Mangini said of his QBs. “I thought Brady did a nice job with the two drives he had. But the ultimate objective is to score points.”

Mangini said he started Quinn because Anderson got the call during an Aug. 9 scrimmage. The coach went with Quinn for one possession, Anderson for two, then back to Quinn.

”I was trying to get them a balanced amount of plays,” Mangini said, even though Quinn took more snaps in his first series than Anderson did in his two. ”We had that 10-play drive [with Quinn] and one quick one for D.A. I wasn’t sure how long I was going to go with the [offensive starters].”

Quinn can activate a $5 million escalator in his rookie contract by playing in 70 percent of the Browns’ offensive snaps this year. Quinn also needs to play 45 percent of the snaps to earn another $1.32 million.

So in theory the Browns could save $6.32 million by starting Anderson this year. Hard to imagine that finances will factor into the decision, but I’m just putting that out there.
