Bills likely won’t have starting QB vs. Panthers

Usually you probably don’t want to bet on a team that will be without its starting quarterback for a game, but that’s not the case perhaps for Sunday’s Bills game at Carolina.

The Bills are 7-point dogs on WagerWeb.com currently, but their chances of winning might increase now that it appears starter won’t play. That sounds harsh, but that’s how below average Edwards has been this season.

Edwards suffered a concussion last Sunday against the Jets and was not on the field for the second straight day on Thursday. Ryan Fitzpatrick continues to take the starters reps for Buffalo. He rallied the Bills from 10-point deficit to produce a 16-13 overtime win over New York. He went 10 of 25 for 116 yards with a touchdown and interception.

In the past three games that Edwards played, he led the Bills on three scoring drives. In the three-plus quarters that Fitzpatrick played in New York he matched him with three scoring drives.

Dick Jauron hasn’t officially ruled Edwards out, but it’s nearly certain Fitzpatrick will start Sunday at Carolina. Edwards has a growing history of concussions, having suffered one last year, so the Bills will be extremely cautious. Edwards is on pace for just 2,252 yards and 12 TDs this season despite the Bills adding Terrell Owens.

Signed in free agency, Fitzpatrick is in his fifth year and coming off a season in which he closed the season making 12 straight starts for the Bengals after Carson Palmer was hurt. After a shaky start, Fitzpatrick helped the Bengals go 4-3-1 down the stretch, including winning his last three games. You better believe he could keep this job going forward with a good performance this week.

“(Ryan) knows what he’s doing, he prepares like he’s the No. 1 guy and he understands the offense and knows what he’s doing when he’s in there. We’re all comfortable with him being in there,” Bills RB Fred Jackson said.
