Bills’ Jackson should be fine for opener
With starting running back Marshawn Lynch suspended for the first three games of the regular season, the Buffalo Bills can’t afford anything to happen to versatile backup Fred Jackson or they risk getting off to a bad start.
Well, Jackson was breathing much easier this week knowing that his sprained left wrist shouldn’t cause him to miss the start of the regular season. He was hurt Tuesday during practice and the wrist and thumb have been too sore for him to go since then. But tests showed no serious injury.
“It was a little scary yesterday when I first did it, but I feel fine right now,” Jackson said. “That’s always a good thing when the X-rays come back negative, so I’m enthusiastic about that.”
Jackson took a pitch during 11-on-11 drills and landed awkwardly after being hit by safety Donte Whitner. Jackson, whose thumb was already heavily wrapped, felt pain between his thumb and wrist after colliding with Whitner.

Jackson hoped to test the injury in practice on Thursday to determine whether he’ll be able to play in Buffalo’s preseason game at Pittsburgh on Saturday; the Steelers are 5.5-point favorites on WagerWeb.com. Jackson would not rule himself out for that game, but the Bills are likely to be cautious about putting him into action before the opener. Look for second-year running back Xavier Omon to see extended playing time against the Steelers.
The Bills close their preseason schedule hosting the Detroit Lions on Sept. 3, before opening the season at New England on Sept. 14 – the Patriots are 10.5-point favorites on WagerWeb.com.
Meanwhile, Terrell Owens worked out again on the side for a second day while his teammates practiced Wednesday. Owens was not catching passes from a quarterback and will sit out a third straight exhibition game Saturday due to his sprained right toe.
