49ers sticking with Alex Smith at QB

Maybe the career of former No. 1 overall pick Alex Smith is finally on the right track.

Smith looked terrific in Sunday’s 24-21 loss at Houston, nearly rallying the 49ers back from a huge hole.

And coach Mike Singletary announced Monday that Smith had earned the job for good, replacing Shaun Hill.

“We’re not going to be a flavor-of-the-month kind of team,” Singletary said in saying he saw this as a long-term move.

Against Houston, Smith completed 15 of 22 passes for 206 yards and three touchdowns (the Niners were down 21-0), igniting an offense that had sputtered all season. His first start since Nov. 12, 2007 will come Sunday against Peyton Manning and the Colts – bet on the game at WagerWeb.com.

Smith, the No. 1 overall draft pick out of Utah in 2005, missed last season after reinjuring his surgically repaired throwing shoulder three days before the season opener. Hill completed 6 of 11 passes for 45 yards before the 49ers made the switch at halftime against the Texans. The eight-year veteran was 21 of 49 passing for 243 yards and no touchdowns with one interception in the past two games, both losses. He hasn’t passed for more than 209 yards in a game this season, which Smith nearly matched in a half.

“I had to make a decision based on what I feel gives us the best chance to win,” Singletary said. “When I look at Alex, I really didn’t know what we were going to get. I was hoping we’d get what we saw in practice, and that’s what we got. We’re going to go forward with that.”

Frankly, the Niners need to do something on defense. . The 49ers gave up an average of 13.3 points through their first four games and have yielded 34.5 points in the last two.
