Sooners star Gresham out for BYU game?
Here’s a potential very important mitigating factor in No. 3 Oklahoma’s game against No. 20 BYU in Dallas on Saturday: Sooners All-American tight end Jermaine Gresham has injured a knee this week and is not likely to play.
The Sooners are hoping that the injury is not serious and won’t cost Gresham, who tweaked the knee in practice Tuesday, lost time beyond this week. Oklahoma is not commenting on Gresham’s injury at this time. Reports are that he has cartilage damage. Citing unnamed sources, Oklahoma City television station KWTV reports that Gresham, doctors and coaches are evaluating how to proceed with the injury.
OUInsider.com reported he was hurt near the end of Wednesday’s practice and did not practice the next day, although he was on the sideline without crutches or a brace.
The 6-foot-6, 258-pound Gresham had 66 receptions for 950 yards and 14 touchdowns last season. He was a Sporting News First Team All-American last season and an Associated Press and Walter Camp second-team All-American.
One possible replacement is Brody Eldridge, who had been working at center during most of preseason camp. The Sooners also could consider using sophomore tight end Trent Ratterree.
So would this injury hurt the Sooners’ chances of victory against BYU? It’s sort of doubtful, considering the Cougars are 22-point dogs on WagerWeb.com. But I believe this definitely shifts the likelihood the BYU covers.
OU’s offensive line is having enough of an issue trying to incorporate four new starters. The loss of Gresham, though, could hurt on two fronts. He is arguably the nation’s best tight end, Sam Bradford’s No. 1 target and key member of that offensive line.
