Oregon fan gets refund from coach for lousy game
Haven’t you ever watched your favorite team in person lay an egg in an important game and wanted your money back? No chance, right?
Well, Oregon coach Chip Kelly may be onto something here, as he has refunded one Ducks fan following his team’s stinker in the season opener at Boise State.
A fan from Portland, Tony Seminary, an OU alumnus who said he has been an Oregon season-ticket holder since 1996, attended the Boise State opener. He was so angry over not only the loss but the actions of LeGarrette Blount afterward that that he sent Kelly a letter with a billing statement, detailing $439 worth of expenses for the trip — plane and game tickets, meals and a cab ride.
“I am sending you an invoice for my trip to Boise,” Seminary wrote Kelly. “The product on the field Thursday night is not something I was at all proud of. I feel as though I’m entitled to my money back for the trip.”
According to the Web site, Kelly replied to Seminary’s e-mail with a question: “What is your address?”
And a few days later, a check for $439, signed by Kelly, arrived in Seminary’s mailbox. But the fan was so impressed that he wrote Kelly back and returned the check.
“Your kids must want to run through walls for you,” Seminary wrote.
The alum is squarely in Kelly’s corner now.
“I think of Coach Kelly as a totally different person now.”I have a different bond with him now. … Let’s just say he lost every game as an Oregon coach. You would never hear me calling for his head. It just wouldn’t happen. The guy showed an incredible amount of class.”
Oregon athletic director and former football coach Mike Bellotti said that during his career, he has received e-mails and letters demanding money back but complied with those requests.
Kelly has refused to confirm or deny the story.
