Irish to get back Michael Floyd this week
When you look around at all these supposed Heisman favorites who have struggled at times this season, such as Colt McCoy, Tim Tebow and Jevan Snead, it makes it even more of a shame that Notre Dame WR Michael Floyd hasn’t played since the Irish’s third game because of a broken collarbone. Floyd was putting up huge numbers in the 10 quarters he had played, and perhaps the Irish would have beaten USC with him in the lineup and would be a Top-10 team right now.
But Notre Dame still has BCS bowl dreams, and it might just get one should it win out. Thus getting Floyd back now still has its major benefits, and he is expected to play Saturday against Navy, which is an 11-point dog on WagerWeb.com.
Floyd was cleared by doctors Monday night.
“He came back and said he was ready to go,” Irish coach Charlie Weis said. “It wasn’t too long before I was already getting a text from No. 7 [quarterback Jimmy Clausen]. He might have been just as happy as No. 3 [Floyd].”
Floyd had 13 catches for 358 yards and five touchdowns before getting hurt early in the third game of the season against Michigan State. His return gives the Irish perhaps the best one-two punch at wideout in the country, with Golden Tate developing into a star in Floyd’s absence.
The Irish probably don’t need Floyd to beat Navy, but they might to win at Pittsburgh next week; Floyd won’t play a full load of snaps yet against Navy. Notre Dame then closes the season with UConn and at Stanford.
I’m very happy to have Michael back to integrate into the system,” Weis said. “Your game planning on Monday becomes a little different element when you’re adding a top-flight player like Michael to the mix.”
Not all the news is good. Notre Dame backup QB Dayne Crist did tear his anterior cruciate ligament against Washington State and is lost for the year. Fifth-year senior Evan Sharpley, a part-time starter in 2007, steps into the No. 2 quarterback spot. Remember that Clausen is dealing with turf toe, so Sharpley could certain be forced into action before the season is out.
