College football odds: Oregon State at No. 19 UCLA

UCLA has been one of the nation’s big surprises this season with a 3-0 mark, but things start to get much tougher starting Saturday as the Bruins open Pac-12 play by hosting Oregon State. UCLA is a 10-point favorite on

The Bruins, a week after upsetting Nebraska, had no trouble with Houston in a 37-6 victory last weekend. Redshirt freshman QB Brett Hundley passed for 320 yards and two touchdowns, but the defense was the big story.

Houston, which had nearly 700 yards in offense a week earlier, had only 388 against the Bruins. UCLA, which entered the game ranked No. 100 in the nation against the run, held Houston to -1 yards rushing in the first half Saturday, and one yard rushing through three quarters. The Bruins had gotten off to slow starts defensively in each of their first two games. They allowed 24 first-half points to Rice and Nebraska before making adjustments and shutting out Rice in the second half and holding Nebraska to two second-half field goals.

Johnathan Franklin, the nation’s leading rusher, gained 110 yards on 25 carries, Sheldon Price tied a school record with three of UCLA’s five interceptions, and Ka’imi Fairbairn kicked three field goals.

Oregon State has played just one game so far because its opener vs. Nicholls State was postponed. The Beavers were last on the field Sept. 8 and pulled a 10-7 stunner over then-No. 13 Wisconsin. Sean Mannion threw for 276 yards and a touchdown and Oregon State’s defense smothered Wisconsin’s star running back Montee Ball. Oregon State outgained the Badgers 354-207 and had an 11-minute advantage in time of possession.

The Bruins lead the series 41-15-4 and have captured the last two meetings. The two teams met last season in UCLA’s first-ever game in the Pac-12 conference. The Bruins came away with a 27-19 verdict in Corvallis. Turnovers helped UCLA jump out to a 21-3 lead. After OSU closed to 21-19 on the last play of the third quarter, the Bruins used a one-yard scoring run by Anthony Barr to go ahead 27-19 with 6:15 to play in the contest. In 2010, Kai Forbath booted a 51-yard field goal on the last play of the Bruin win in the Rose Bowl. trends: Under is 4-0 in the last 4 meetings. Underdog is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 meetings. Road team is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 meetings. Beavers are 1-8 ATS in their last 9 meetings.
