Top recruit Brown won’t decide on Signing Day

Look, it’s rare that an incoming true freshman will make a huge difference in his first season of college football. But occasionally there are those like a Terrelle Pryor who can affect a team’s NCAA futures odds on WagerWeb.com, and Bryce Brown, the top recruit in 2009, might be one of them.

Brown, a running back out of Wichita (Kan.) East High School, verbally committed to Miami months ago. But verbal commitments aren’t binding, and Brown has basically gone into hiding with Signing Day coming Wednesday. And like Pryor last year with Ohio State, it appears Brown is in no rush to make his college choice official.

”He’s spending a couple weeks getting away from the recruiting scene to reflect and meditate and process the information,” said Bryce’s father, Arthur Brown Sr.. “What he’s doing is wise. I don’t think waiting makes it more of a hectic process. You can’t make any decision based on emotions.”

Brown has made no secret that he is also rather intrigued by playing for Oregon and the Ducks’ well-respected offensive coordinator, Chip Kelly. Miami fired its offensive coordinator, Patrick Nix, not long after the season and recently replaced him with Mark Whipple, an assistant with the and former I-AA national championship coach at Massachusetts. Whipple’s first job after his welcome press conference was to go to Wichita to meet with Brown’s family. In addition, Bryce’s older brother, Arthur, will be a sophomore linebacker at Miami next year – so that bodes well for the Canes.

Bryce Brown says he is still committed to Miami but made it known all along that he wanted to take some visits to schools. Brown, a USA Today All-American who was the co-MVP of the U.S. Army All-American game, has since taken official visits to Oregon, Clemson, Kansas State and Missouri. He has one official visit left, and USC, Tennessee and Auburn are still in the running for that. Brown has obviously taken several “unofficial” visits to Miami to see his brother. Brown has to make a decision by April 1.

At 6-0 and 215 pounds, he runs between 4.3 and 4.4 seconds in the 40-yard dash and is rated the nation’s top high school senior, regardless of position, by Rivals.com and Scout.com. He ran for a Wichita City League record of 1,850 yards and 31 touchdowns in 2008. He is the first running back to be the No. 1 overall recruit since a guy you may have heard of: Adrian Peterson.

Brown could make an impact right away with UM, which will run a pro-style offense under Whipple. The Canes still have Javarris James and Graig Cooper, but neither of those guys has truly dominated yet.

And you though Signing Day had nothing to do with futures odds on WagerWeb.com ….
